How Can I Follow a God Who Would Let Christians Do Such Bad Things?

Main idea: Students will discuss how they feel when Christians act in ways that neglect Jesus’ commandment to love God and neighbor, consider the ways God leads and guides us as followers, and learn to identify the fruit of Christlike leadership.

Some choices Christians have made throughout history—and even today—can be confusing for young people. When Christians act in ways that neglect Jesus’ commandment to love God and love our neighbor, it can cause some to wonder, “How can I follow a God who lets their followers do bad things?”

God gives each person the freedom to make their own choices, good or bad. However, New Testament writers show that God’s people are called not just to know about Jesus' way but to live it authentically. Christians who allow themselves to be guided by God’s Spirit will see the fruit showing up in their actions and decisions, reflecting God's love and character in their lives.

Throughout this session you’ll guide students to talk about historical and current examples of Christians choosing to act in un-Christlike ways and consider why God may not seem to clearly act or intervene. You’ll discuss the fruit of the Spirit as a guide that helps young people discern good teaching from false teaching, and reflect on the ways listening to God’s Holy Spirit can guide them toward growth and transformation.
