Does following Jesus have anything to do with caring for the earth?
Main idea: Students will explore biblical perspectives on caring for God’s creation, wrestle with Christian disagreements about dominion and the end of the earth, and reflect on what it might look like to relate to the natural world as faithful followers of Jesus.
Many Christians disagree about what the Bible says regarding humanity's relationship with the natural world, and teenagers are growing up caught in the middle. Some have been taught that caring for the earth is central to following Jesus; others have heard that environmental concern is a distraction from more important spiritual priorities. Many have simply never been invited to think about it through a biblical lens at all.
Throughout this session, you'll guide students to examine two questions Christians genuinely wrestle with: what it means to have “dominion” over creation, and what the earth's future actually looks like. Students will explore the biblical story from Genesis to Revelation, consider how different readings of the same passages lead to very different conclusions, and reflect on what it might look like to relate to the natural world as faithful followers of Jesus.
