What is hell, really?

Main idea: Students will examine what the Bible means when it refers to hell, discuss how outside sources have shaped their picture of it, and discover that Jesus' teaching points less toward a destination after death and more toward a serious question about how we live now.

Most teens have already formed a picture of hell long before they walk into a youth group conversation about it. That image may come from horror movies, social media, conversations, or fear-based teaching—but rarely from Scripture itself.

Silence on the topic doesn’t reduce teenagers’ anxiety; it leaves them without tools to process it. At the same time, this generation is watching powerful people cause real harm without visible consequences, and they’re wondering, “Does how we live actually matter?”

Throughout this session, you’ll guide students to examine where their picture of hell comes from, consider Jesus’ own teaching in Matthew 25, and reflect on what it means to live now in relationship with a God who takes human actions seriously.
