Where is God When Bad Things Happen?
Main idea: Students will explore common perspectives on why suffering happens and draw on biblical examples as they consider God’s presence amid pain and hard times.
There’s no doubt about it, life can be hard. When teenagers and people they love go through experiences that are harmful, hurtful, or even unfair, they may wonder, “Where is God when bad things happen?”
Throughout this session you’ll guide students to explore different perspectives on why suffering happens in our world. Together, you’ll read and discuss biblical examples of God, through Jesus, entering into tough situations and walking alongside people—even experiencing hardship himself—and reflect on God’s ongoing healing and restorative work in the world. Students will be invited to wrestle with their questions and consider how these examples impact the ways they pray and relate to God.
